Watchkeeper / Flotilla Skipper is a IYT sailing course that is taught by Sail in Asia in Phuket and Pattaya. The course is the foundation course for all potential Captains. It is designed to give an emerging skipper the skills seamanship knowledge, navigational competence and command experience to begin skippering a yacht.
The theory and practical modules are aimed at increasing a students' nautical knowledge sufficiently to be able to stand a watch on board a bareboat yacht or to be a Flotilla Skipper. This course is designed to cover normal yachting requirements in situations of daylight hours, fair weather and in being fairly close to land. Some previous experience of helming and crewing on a yacht is required (IYT Intermational Crew or RYA Competent Crew Certificate is desirable).
Students are taught by experienced IYT/RYA instructors and this ensures you learn only the best techniques, using the safest boats.

We recommend you do some extra sailing, preferably on different boats once you have been awarded the certificate. Look at our milecatcher activities and get extra experience on a variety of different boats. With IYT Watch Leader training, you have the competence to do some flotilla sailing or acting as a Watch Leader alongside a more experienced Captain.
Once you get some further experience you may then enroll on a IYT Bareboat Captain course. (When you have completed a further 200 miles as a skipper and ten days at sea).
At successful course completion students will be awarded the IYT International Watchkeeper / Basic Flotilla Skipper Cert.
